For the Love of Football
CUP’s success began with Mark Abery’s love of football. Playing at very good level, Mark played in the US throughout his youth and eventually made his way back to England, playing for a Colombian team in London. When Mark realised that the chances were slim that he would ever play in the actual World Cup, he decided to invent one himself. Using the local grassroots community connections that he gained through years of playing football in London, Mark was able to create The Inner City World Cup – with teams made from multicultural football players representing their nation of origin and remains the core of the Lovefootball brand.
Soccer Six is born
Growing up in East London, Mark also became friendly with some of the top security companies in London who provided services for many big-name bands and celebrities. Through these personal relationships, Mark learnt that most of the musicians he met were huge football fans, but due to their status they couldn’t simply go to the local park for a kick-around. It was at this point that the pioneering idea for Soccer Six was born. Soccer Six was then unique and would not only be a place for celebrities to enjoy playing competitive football amongst their peers – but has also evolved with the times and has remained a great opportunity for fans to personally see and meet their idols, or interact digitally within a huge media interest.
The Biggest Celebrity Football Tournament
The first Soccer Six event took place at Mile End stadium and was a great success. And by 1996, Soccer Six hit the national news with Oasis vs. Blur – plus Jamiroquai, Robbie Williams, Jude Law and Pulp. Soccer Six then rode a massive wave of popularity through the late 90s and 00s, attracting crowds in their thousands and huge names such as Rod Stewart, Iron Maiden, Ant & Dec, Jason Statham, Pete Doherty, Kate Moss, Amy Winehouse, Damien Lewis, Take That, Blue, Nicholas Hoult, Katie Price, Alfie Allen, Westlife, The Wanted, Olly Murs, Nash Grier and many many more…
The Inner City World Cup also went from strength to strength with more teams becoming involved. The World Cup now sits under the trademarked brand Lovefootball and has become part of the annual Lovefootball event. With age groups from small kids to veterans now involved at events, Lovefootball continues to bind people and communities together even further via their digital portals.
Other Pioneering Events
CUP built on their success by also launching many other original, pioneering events including; “Netball 7s” – Celebrity Netball, “Dunk ‘n’ Funk” – Celebrity Basketball, “Smashed” – Celebrity Tennis, “The Stars Cup” & “The Game of History”– A series of 11-a-side football matches, Fanta5tic 5s – A 5-a-side schools initiative, and many others over the years.
CUP continue to create and stage innovative events to grow the brands using its vast and rich history as a force for the future.
